Sometimes a movie comes along that just makes you sit up and take notice. And leave the theater wondering how in the world the writers and directors convinced the actors to star in the movie, and the producers to pay for the movie. Sometimes these movies are a flop, but sometimes they are fantastic masterpieces that otherwise never would have been made had it not been for the visionary writers. “Crank: High Voltage,” starring Jason Statham is such a film.
Our fabled account starts with the hero being thrown out of a helicopter. The oversize thump he makes on the soil makes the evening news, of course, but not before his body is scooped up and taken away in a van crammed with questionable characters. Next thing we know, our central character is lying in a make shift hospice, and being operated on by a medical doctor with a cigarette hanging out of his lips.
He wakes up, and finds that his heart has been replaced by a automatic heart. We find out that our hero has an unusually brawny heart, and it has been stolen to be implanted into the leader of a known criminal crowd somewhere in Southern California. So our character has to not only unearth his original heart, but he also has to locate someone to replace it out with the electrical one that has been rooted into him.
There’s only one problem. His electrical, fleeting heart runs off of an exterior battery that gets dented somehow. So he must always give himself electrical shocks to keep his impermanent heart from giving out on him. This makes for an out of the ordinary chase across the wilderness of southern California, as he battles gangsters from all walks of life.
All through the entire escapade to locate his previous heart, he is in constant contact with a friend of his, who happens to be a skilled open heart general practitioner, although we learn he has had his medicinal license taken away due to some regrettable mishap that unfolded with an ex girlfriend of his. But even so, we believe that once our hero locates his initial heart, his friend will be able to swap it out with the counterfeit one.
We have the definitive crusade, which includes our character, two adversary gangs, and a gangster’s skull that is being kept full of beans in jar. In a last ditch effort to charge his heart one last time, our hero climbs up an electrical pole and zaps himself one last time. But the electrical shock proves to be a bit too stout, and he is engulfed in flames. Meanwhile, his accomplice lucratively finds his original heart, and his friend, the shamed heart surgeon, attempts to restore him to health. Will he be successful? The only way to find out is to rent this fantastic DVD, before it’s too late.
